Rising Methane Emissions from Boreal-Arctic Wetlands

Speaker: Min Chen, assistant professor, Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, UW–Madison.

In a recent study, Chen and colleagues found an alarming increase in methane emissions from boreal wetlands over the past two decades. These high emissions were particularly prominent during the early summer months, driven by warmer temperatures, and increased productivity of wetland ecosystems. Interestingly, current models used to predict methane emissions from wetlands failed to capture both the magnitude of these emissions and their increasing trend.
